HISTORY

History – Lagos Anglican Girls’ Grammar School (LAGGS)

Lagos Anglican Girls’ Grammar School (LAGGS) was formally opened on January 27, 1955, at 10:00 a.m., with a short service conducted by Rev. Canon T.O. Dedeke. In its early days, the school was graciously allowed to operate within the premises of Lagos Anglican Girls’ School at 17 Broad Street, Lagos Island, thanks to the kind permission of Mrs. O. Fagbemi, the headmistress at the time. This arrangement lasted for a year while preparations were made for a permanent site and building.

The school was entrusted to the capable leadership of its founding principal, Miss Busola Phillips (later Mrs. Busola Olumide), a dedicated educator, philanthropist, and astute school administrator. Known for her unwavering commitment to discipline and excellence, she guided the institution for 22 years, retiring in 1977.

Over the years, LAGGS relocated first to Idiagbon before finally settling in Surulere, where it continues to uphold its legacy of academic excellence. Established by the Anglican Communion, the school’s mission has always been to provide quality education for the girl-child, instilling knowledge, discipline, and self-reliance to shape confident leaders.

LAGGS remains a beacon of learning, molding generations of young women into outstanding individuals who contribute meaningfully to society.
